In January of 1973, the Paris Peace Accords was signed and it called for a ceasefire between the North and the South. It also marked the beginning of the withdrawal of American troops in Vietnam. Shortly after, in August of 1974, President Richard Nixon resigned from office or else he would have been impeached for taking advantage of his power. The North Vietnamese had feared Nixon because he threatened to bomb them if they invaded or attacked anyone in the South. After Nixon resigned, the North took this as an opportunity to begin invading the South.

The North Vietnamese army was supplied with everything they needed by Russia, and the Southern army was lacking supplies they needed because the United States had began leaving the country. In the end, North Vietnam had managed to take over the capital of South Vietnam, Saigon, and the United States was forced to evacuate with as many Vietnamese as possible. Because of this, Vietnam was reunified as one and the whole country was under communist rule. |
In 1950, the United States established diplomatic relations with Vietnam and in 2000, President Bill Clinton visited the country to try and normalize relations with the former enemy. Today, Vietnam is still considered a communist country, but is in a healthy state, economically and politically. |
